    Summer Health Tips

    George's Pharmacy Health Tips Newsletter

    Does Your Medication Look Different?

Generic medications may very in size, color and shape. Even though medications have the same active ingredients, a generic drug made by a different manufacturer will often look different. Pharmacies are frequently required to change suppliers or wholesalers due to price changes, and their stock of generic drugs may continually rotate. Do not let this alarm you.
Ensure you have the right medication. Ask your pharmacist when you pick up your medicine or look on the label. There are two ways to tell if your medication is labeled properly: look on the bottom of the label in small print for a description of your medication's identifying marks or, if your prescription was filled robotically, look on the yellow portion of the label.

    No Prescription Needed!

Hey, allergy sufferers! Full prescription-strength Flonase and Nasacort Allergy 24HR are both now available without a prescription. Nasacort Allergy 24HR has been approved for treatment of seasonal and year-round nasal allergies inadults and children 2 years of age and older. Once-daily FLONASE® offers 24-hour relief of both nose- and eye-related allergy symptoms.

    Immunizations Available.

Our pharmacy offers immunizations for age 12 and up and from birth to age 12 with a medical order. We also offer the pneumococcal vaccine, hepatitis A & B, TDAP, M13 & M23 vaccines. Stop in today or call the pharmacy for details.
Stop by the pharmacy and register for text message alerts and know right away that your prescription is ready for pickup.

You can also register onlinewith your email or download the app to order refills digitally.

    Regulations Limit Prescriptions

The DEA allows each pharmacy a limited amount of controlled substances for each fulfillment order. The size of each pharmacy's supply is based on the previous total prescriptions supplied by the pharmacy. This means that at our pharmacy we are allowed to fill a limited number of pain medications each month. We are happy to be able to provide our patients who fill all of their prescriptions at our pharmacy. However, due to the limitations imposed by the DEA, we are unable to service those who only fill some of their prescriptions with us, and apologize for any inconvenience. Please speak to the pharmacy if you would like to transfer all of your prescriptions. We are happy to help!

Why does the look of my medication change?

The look of a brand name medication is often patented. This means that generic manufacturers cannot duplicate how a brand name pill looks in terms of color, size and shape. This, combined with insurance plan’s frequently changing approved list of medications, determines which drugs are covered by your insurance. Pharmacies and insurance companies negotiate the price of drugs with manufacturers to ensure savings are passed on to the patient.
Generic drug manufacturers produce pills that look different from company to company, even though it may be the same medication, resulting in the patient receiving different looking pills from month to month. “The ideal situation is that your medications stay standard and constant, but we know that’s not always possible,” says Allen Vaida, PharmD, executive vice president of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
If you and your physician determine that either a generic or brand name drug is best for you, make sure your pharmacist knows. If your doctor writes your prescription specifically for the generic, that’s what the pharmacist will give you. If you require the brand name drug, ask your doctor to indicate that on your prescription.
Ensure you have the right medication. Ask your pharmacist when you pick up your medicine or look on the label.

    Helpful Winter Health Tips

    George's Pharmacy
    Winter Tips Newsletter

Combat the cold's effects on your health this holiday season with tips from our  Heath & Wellness Newsletter!

    Health Care Enrollment Tips

With the new year just around the corner, deadlines are quickly approaching to enroll or renew your health care programs. This year, many health plans are mandating mail order prescription programs for members.

Problems with mail-order pharmacies range from mixed-up medications to delayed deliveries to spoiled shipments left on doorsteps in the winter weather or summer sun.

A mail order pharmacist cannot speak to your doctor or fully understand your medical needs. Your pharmacist plays a critical role in the delivery of effective drug treatments through:
    • Face-to-face, personalized counseling
    • Drug monitoring, attention to side effects and potential drug interactions
    • Support with medication adherence challenges
This year before you register, make sure to read your prescription plan details, and call your insurance provider for program particulars.

    My Medicine Therapy

One of the most important ways you can manage your health is by taking your medication as directed. Medical professionals report complications from not following prescription plans include hospitalizations, nursing home admissions, physician visits, and other avoidable health care costs.
If you're fighting heart, high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, regularly filling your prescription will not only keep you healthy and save in health care costs, but you may also avoid being penalized by higher premiums due to heightened risk of complications.

    Winter Health Tips

During the cold winter months, your body needs additional vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system, and it's important to take a multi-vitamin daily. Not sure what supplements are best for you? Ask your pharmacist today!
Dress warmly and stay dry during winter. Adults and children should wear a hat, scarf, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, mittens (they're warmer than gloves), water-resistant coat and boots, and layered loose-fitting clothing. Wet clothing chills the body rapidly. Excess perspiration will increase heat loss, so remove extra layers when you get too warm.

Dry skin is a common problem and often worsens during the winter months. It can occur at all ages and in people with or without other skin problems. To ward off dry winter skin, apply lotion twice daily - once after showering and once before bed.

    Extreme Heat Tips

In the height of the summer season, your body's temperature control system may not always be able to keep up, and your body temperature can get dangerously high. Heat illnesses can affect anyone, but those with chronic health conditions are at greatest risk. Follow these tips to stay safe from heat-related illnesses this summer.
    • STAY COOL.  Stay inside, in air-conditioning if you can, or in cool places such as basements.  Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.  Take cool showers.  Sleep without sheets.  Draw the shades to keep out morning and afternoon sun.
    • STAY HYDRATED. Drink more water than usual, especially if exercising or active outdoors. Be proactive, don’t wait until you are thirsty.  Avoid alcohol and caffeine because they make you lose water.
    • LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.  Take it easy.  Reduce exercise and limit it to the cooler parts of the day.  If you feel sick, ask for help.  Stop what you are doing if you feel faint or weak. Heat can worsen existing chronic health conditions.
    • DON’T BE A STRANGER. Check on your loved ones and neighbors, especially if they are elderly or have chronic health conditions.  Make sure they are drinking enough water and are staying cool.  Remind them to take heat seriously!
    • NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN, ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES, OR PETS IN A PARKED VEHICLE.  The sun can turn a vehicle into an oven within minutes, even if it doesn’t feel hot outside.

    Sunscreen 101

Stay safe from harmful summer rays this summer. To reduce your risk of skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
    • Choose a sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher (SPF 30 blocks 97% of the sun's harmful rays)
    • Water-resistant sunscreens protect for longer periods of time when you are in water or sweating
    • Sunscreen needs reapplied every two hours when you are outdoors and every hour when going in and out of water
    • Wear sun-protective clothing, hats and sunglasses and find shade during the hottest time of the day for additional protection
    • Sunscreen isn't recommended for children younger than 6 months, so it's best to keep them out of the sun
    • Sunscreens lose effectiveness over time. Discard sunscreen that is more than 3 years old or appears discolored

    Stop The Itch!

Try these tips for relief from summer skin irritants like heat rash, bug bites, poison ivy and other itchy bumps.
    • Apply a wet cloth, or soak the area in cool water
    • Use calamine lotion or product with hydrocortisone to help relieve itching
    • Take Benadryl to relieve widespread rashes
    • Try not to scratch. Scratching could cause a skin infection
See your Doctor if a rash lasts for more than three to four days, gets worse, or if you have signs of infection, such as fever or increased pain, swelling, or redness.

    Spring Health Newsletter

    George's Pharmacy
    Spring Tips Newsletter

This spring season and always we strive to help you live a healthier, happier life and hope our Heath & Wellness Newsletter helps support you on your wellness journey.

    Tips to Manage Springtime Allergies

    • Limit early-morning outdoor activities, when pollen is usually emitted.
    • Stay indoors as much as possible when humidity and pollen counts are high.
    • Enlist someone else to mow the lawn, since that stirs up pollen and mold.
    • Close windows at night to help keep pollen out.
    • Take medications as prescribed by your doctor or discuss over-the-counter alternatives with your pharmacist.
    • Some folks plan vacations to pollen-free places during spring.

To check daily pollen and mold counts, go to the National Allergy Bureau at www.aaaai.org.

    George's App

With the official George's Pharmacy app, you can order your refill prescriptions from your iPhone or Android device. Simply enter your prescription number, first and last name, and phone number - then click the refill button. And to save your personal information for easier use each time you want to refill a prescription, you can create a user profile using a secure login. There is no charge to download the app.

    Traveling with Prescriptions

When you are traveling with prescription medications, make sure someone back home has an extra copy of your prescriptions. Also, carry a list of your medications with you, including names and dosages. Keep all medications in their original containers. If you have any injectable medications, carry a letter, on your doctor's letterhead, with the physician's prescription for it. If you are flying, pack your medications in your carryon bag for easy access and so they aren't lost or delayed. If traveling internationally, be sure to check with the American Embassy or Consulate to ensure your medications are allowed in the host country.
